Pole Top Rescue &Working at Heights — Electricity Network Structures (WTC3)

Develop the skills required to safely climb and work on electricity network structures and carry out pole-top rescue operations. This two-day course combines practical working at heights training with specialised training for electricity network environments, including safe climbing techniques, correct use of fall protection equipment, and emergency rescue procedures from electrical structures.

The training focuses on practical application and industry best practice to ensure participants can work confidently and safely when operating at height on electricity network infrastructure.

What You’ll Learn

Participants will develop knowledge and practical skills in:

  • Hazard identification and risk management when working at height

  • Correct selection, inspection, and fitting of safety harnesses and fall protection equipment

  • Safe climbing techniques on electricity network structures

  • Work positioning and safe work practices when working on poles and structures

  • Emergency planning and response when working at height

  • Practical pole top rescue techniques from electrical structures

 

Course Delivery

This course is delivered over two days with a strong focus on practical training and assessment.

Day 1

NZQA Unit Standard 23229 – Use a safety harness for personal fall prevention when working at height (4 credits)

Day 2

NZQA Unit Standard 10509 – Climb and work on electricity network structures (6 credits)

NZQA Unit Standard 17025 – Carry out a rescue from an electrical structure (2 credits)

Training includes both classroom learning and practical exercises, allowing participants to demonstrate competency using industry-standard equipment and rescue techniques.

Pre-Requisites

Participants must hold the following First Aid NZQA unit standards:

  • 6401 & 6402

Recommended skills and knowledge

  • Unit Standard 10507 – Use personal protective equipment in an electricity supply environment or demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills.
