NZQA Standards – Which Option Should I Choose?
BeSafe Training is transitioning to the new NZQA First Aid Skill Standards.
NZQA has introduced Skill Standards 41052 and 41053 to replace the existing Unit Standards 6401 and 6402. During the transition period, both options remain available and valid, so you can select the standards that best match your workplace, employer or qualification requirements.
New Skill Standards – Recommended Going Forward
41053 – Administer basic life support
Level 2 | 1 credit
41052 – Administer first aid
Level 2 | 1 credit
These are the new NZQA standards replacing 6402 and 6401 and will increasingly be referenced in updated qualifications and training requirements. NZQA specifies 41053 as the prerequisite for 41052.
Choose this option if:
- your qualification or employer requires 41052 and 41053
- you are starting new training and have not been specifically told to complete 6401 and 6402
- you simply require a current NZQA First Aid qualification and have no requirement for particular standard numbers.
Existing Unit Standards – Still Available
6402 – Provide basic life support
Level 2 | 2 credits
6401 – Provide first aid
Level 2 | 1 credit
These standards are being phased out but remain available for assessment until 31 December 2027.
Choose this option if:
- your qualification, apprenticeship or training plan specifically requires 6401 and 6402
- your employer or organisation has asked for these particular unit standards
- you are completing an existing programme that has not yet transitioned to the new Skill Standards.
Not Sure Which Option You Need?
If you have been given specific standard numbers by your employer, worksite or training provider, choose those standards.
If no particular standard numbers have been specified, we recommend selecting the new Skill Standards 41052 and 41053.
Both options provide workplace first aid training — the main difference is the NZQA standards recorded following successful completion.
