Oral Fluid Collection & On-Site Drug Screening
Gain the practical skills and knowledge needed to collect oral fluid specimens and carry out onsite oral fluid drug screening in the workplace.
This course is designed for people who are responsible for workplace drug testing and need to undertake oral fluid specimen collection and onsite drug screening.
It covers donor preparation, specimen collection, chain of custody, quality control and quality assurance, oral fluid integrity checks, onsite drug screening, documentation, interpretation of results and appropriate actions following screening.
Training includes theory, practical activities and assessment to ensure learners can follow appropriate workplace oral fluid drug testing procedures confidently and consistently.
Unit Standards
US32327 – Perform oral fluid specimen collection in the workplace for drug testing
Level 3 | 2 credits
This unit standard covers preparing the environment, equipment and donor for oral fluid specimen collection, collecting oral fluid specimens and preparing and dispatching specimens to a laboratory for drug testing.
US32328 – Perform oral fluid drug screening in the workplace
Level 4 | 4 credits
This unit standard covers quality control and quality assurance requirements, oral fluid integrity checks, onsite drug screening, chain-of-custody procedures, documentation and the interpretation and explanation of screening results.
Course Outcomes
On successful completion of this course, learners will be able to:
- Prepare the environment and equipment for oral fluid specimen collection
- Prepare the donor and explain the collection process
- Confirm donor identification and informed consent
- Collect oral fluid specimens using appropriate collection procedures
- Check and record specimen integrity
- Maintain chain-of-custody requirements throughout the collection and screening process
- Prepare, secure and dispatch specimens to a laboratory where required
- Describe quality control and quality assurance requirements for onsite oral fluid screening
- Explain the purpose of verification and external proficiency testing
- Carry out onsite quality control procedures
- Perform oral fluid integrity checks
- Perform onsite oral fluid drug screening in accordance with manufacturer instructions
- Accurately document collection, quality control and screening results
- Interpret and explain integrity checks and drug screening results
- Identify appropriate actions following quality control failures, integrity issues or screening results
- Explain when laboratory confirmation or additional testing may be required
Who Should Attend?
This course is suitable for people who are responsible for, or will be undertaking, oral fluid specimen collection and onsite drug screening in the workplace.
It may be suitable for health and safety personnel, workplace drug and alcohol testing personnel, supervisors, managers, occupational health providers and others responsible for workplace drug testing processes.
Delivery Method
Online via Zoom and practical assessment
The course combines theory with practical demonstration, hands-on oral fluid specimen collection and on-site drug screening activities.
Learners must successfully complete the required theory and practical assessments to achieve the applicable NZQA unit standards.
Certification
Learners who successfully complete all assessment requirements will be reported for:
- US32327 – Perform oral fluid specimen collection in the workplace for drug testing
- US32328 – Perform oral fluid drug screening in the workplace
A Besafe Training Certificate will also be issued following successful completion.less
