Refresher Oral Fluid Collection & Onsite Drug Screening
Refresh and demonstrate the practical skills and knowledge required to collect oral fluid specimens and carry out onsite oral fluid drug screening in the workplace.
This refresher course is designed for people who have previously completed training in workplace oral fluid drug testing and need to maintain their knowledge, practical skills and competency.
The course revisits oral fluid specimen collection, donor preparation, chain of custody, quality control and assurance, specimen integrity checks, onsite drug screening, documentation and the interpretation of screening results.
Training includes practical activities and assessment to ensure learners continue to follow appropriate workplace drug testing procedures confidently, consistently and in accordance with relevant requirements.
Unit Standards
US32327 – Perform oral fluid specimen collection in the workplace for drug testing
Level 3 | 2 credits
This unit standard covers preparing the environment, equipment and donor for oral fluid specimen collection, collecting oral fluid specimens and preparing and dispatching specimens to a laboratory where required.
US32328 – Perform oral fluid drug screening in the workplace
Level 4 | 4 credits
This unit standard covers quality control and quality assurance requirements, oral fluid integrity checks, onsite drug screening, chain-of-custody procedures, documentation and the interpretation and explanation of screening results.
Course Outcomes
On successful completion of this refresher course, learners will be able to:
- Prepare the environment and equipment for oral fluid specimen collection
- Prepare and correctly identify the donor prior to collection
- Follow appropriate consent and oral fluid collection procedures
- Collect and handle oral fluid specimens correctly
- Maintain chain-of-custody requirements
- Prepare specimens for dispatch to a laboratory where further testing or confirmation is required
- Describe quality control and quality assurance requirements for onsite oral fluid screening
- Carry out appropriate onsite quality control procedures
- Perform oral fluid integrity checks
- Perform onsite oral fluid drug screening in accordance with manufacturer instructions
- Accurately document collection, quality control and screening results
- Interpret and explain integrity checks and drug screen results
- Identify appropriate actions following screening results, integrity issues or quality control failures
- Explain when laboratory confirmation or additional testing may be required
Who Should Attend?
This refresher course is suitable for people who have previously completed training and assessment in NZQA Unit Standards 32327 and 32328 within the past three (3) years.
Previous training will be reviewed as part of enrolment to confirm that the refresher course is appropriate for the learner.
Delivery Method
Online via Zoom and practical assessment
The course combines refresher theory with practical demonstration, oral fluid specimen collection and on-site drug screening activities.
Learners must successfully complete the required refresher theory and practical assessment requirements.
Certification
